The imposing castle of Chalais is a real eye-catcher, it dominates the town from its rocky spur. Enter the castle via its drawbridge, one of the few still in working order, and plunge into the history of the Talleyrand-Périgord. This imposing castle was once the family home of the aristocratic Talleyrand-Périgord family. Access to the main coutyard is via a 16th century drawbridge, one of the few working examples of this kind of drawbridge in France. The Renaissance-style architecture of the main living area of the castle is remarkable for its typical 17th century façade. A guided tour of the castle focuses on the story of the Talleyrand-Périgord family and the castle's rebirth, with details and anectodes from experts of the heritage Association pour la Sauvegarde du Patrimoine de Chalais.
